How do you make a math assessment not feel like a math assessment?

Math assessments are an integral part of the 4th and 5th grade experience.

Since in 4th and 5th grade students are learning concepts like place value, fractions, and decimal work along with some of the other skills they’ve been building on for a while (like multiplication and division), constant review, practice, and assessment of these standards is incredibly important for two reasons.

  • Quickly identifying where students are getting held up.
  • Figuring out what needs to be retaught or reviewed.

Teachers don’t have time to do individual math assessments daily for each of the many standards they are working on. This is why having some no prep, fun math assessments for 4th and 5th grade students ready to go is an effective way to make both formatively and summatively assessing students a little easier.

Daily Math Warm Ups

Embedding daily math warm ups into your day as a bell ringer, mid-day break, or quick after lunch or recess activity gives teachers a chance to assess their 4th and 5th graders daily without all the anxiety and stress of a typical test or quiz.

Our Daily Math Warm Ups are designed to spiral the standards and review all of the upper elementary math standards throughout the year. The warm ups were specifically created to follow the order in which the math skills and standards are typically taught in 4th and 5th grade.

In 4th Grade, for example, the warm ups focus on these different topics…

Quick and Easy Documentation

To make documenting where a student is on each standard even easier, we’ve created a complimentary FREE Standards Checklist that you can download today to get started!

This Free Standards Checklist includes all of the math standards for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, along with spaces where you can document how your students are doing on each standard.

This checklist pairs nicely with the Daily Math Warm Ups for easy assessment documentation throughout the year.

Consistent Formatting Makes for Light Work

In addition to naturally covering all of the 4th and 5th grade math standards and reviewing 3rd grade standards, each Math Warm Up includes common formatting that helps students know what to expect. The consistent formatting also helps to eliminate the amount of time the warm ups take to set up and implement daily.

The 4th Grade Warm Ups include…

  • A number of the Day where students must give the word, expanded, and base 10 version of the number.
  • “Quick Check” reviews a quick item that students need to know. Sometimes it is a building block for content that will be coming up in the resource. Sometimes it’s a quick review of something they should already know.
  • “Spiral Review” is a word problem that digs deeper into the standard and gets students thinking. These problems start with simple place value, rounding, and whole numbers and then gradually add in decimals, fractions, measurement, and geometry all while continuing to revisit a variety of standards throughout the year.

The 5th Grade Warm Ups include…

  • Daily decimal where students must give the word, expanded, and base 10 version of the number.
  • “Quick Check” reviews a quick item that students need to know. Sometimes it is a building block for content that will be coming up in the resource. Sometimes it’s a quick review of something they should already know.

Effective, Quick, and Fun Math Assessments for 4th and 5th Grade

The Math Warm Ups are not your typical math handout or worksheet. The warm ups are designed to be printed or used with Google Slides and are colorful, easy to look at, and even more fun because of the different types of images and interactive math tools used within the Google Slides version.

Since each day is limited to only a few specifically designed practice questions, students are able to complete the warm ups in a very short amount of time which makes them perfect for bell ringers, morning work, an individual center or station work, or transitional activity while you are busy setting up the next class project.

All of these different uses allow for these fun math assessments for 4th and 5th grade to become a daily part of your students’ lives without any of the normal hubbubs of a typical assessment, quiz, or test.

Assessments don’t have to be boring or monotonous or even a big deal. In fact, some of the best assessments are the ones that don’t even feel like assessments at all.
