Valentine’s Day Fun for Different Subject Areas

Let’s get this (non)party started with the core subject areas.

Reading

These Valentine’s Day Close Reads and this Valentine’s Day Game Show are sure to be a hit during your reading time on this February holiday.

The Close Reads with Mystery Pictures feature 3 passages, each differentiated for 3 levels. The resource includes a fictional passage about a boy on Valentine’s Day called “The Card.” In addition to the fictional passage, there are also two nonfiction passages. The first is about the history behind Valentine’s Day cards, and the second is about the history of Valentine’s Day.

The Valentine’s Day Game Show is great for a small group or for working through as a whole class. You can do all the questions or just a few. Either way, this jeopardy-style activity is sure to get your students in the holiday spirit.

Writing

Review and formatively assess your students’ figurative language skills by asking them to write Valentine’s Day poems. The poems don’t have to be long; just be clear about what kinds of figurative language students use or how many examples they use.

Another option for your writing time is to use the Valentine’s Day writing prompt from the Holiday of the Day Writing Prompts as your daily writing practice.

Feel free to project the slide below for your writing prompt on Valentine’s Day!

Grammar

Math

We’ve got a whole bunch of options for your math block on Valentine’s Day. The hardest part will be figuring out how you’re going to use them.

First, you can do some of your normal math activities and stations with candy hearts rather than normal tokens or markers.

You could also use these Digital Fraction Puzzles. We have puzzles available for each of the following grade levels. Just click on the link below to learn more about the skills focused on at each level.

Lastly, be sure to check out these February-themed math skill spiraling task cards! They are great to use in lots of different ways throughout the week of Valentine’s Day.

Science

Try out some Candy Heart Science on Valentine’s Day. Use conversation hearts to teach concepts like dissolving, chemical reactions, or even density by conducting experiments with these candies.

History

Our Valentine’s Day Close Reads with Mystery Pictures can also be used during your history lesson as you have a few different informational passages to choose from to learn more about the history of both Valentine’s Day Greeting Cards and Valentine’s Day in general.

Technology

As part of your technology block or tech special, teach students to create digital Valentine’s Day cards using Canva or another web-based platform. Maybe you can even send them to parents or friends!

Art Class

Make hand-made Valentine’s Cards using found classroom materials. Blend this activity with the in-class Valentine’s Day poem activity to create some one-of-a-kind Valentine’s masterpieces!

Another fun option is to create art from common Valentine’s candies like SweeTARTS, candy hearts, or even pixie sticks.

Valentine’s Day is a lot of fun, and even though having a party is common, it is not for everyone. This year, ditch the typical sugar-filled celebration and try having some Valentine’s Day fun without the party!
